Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, as pro bono co-counsel with New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) and Rapid Defense Network(RDN, formerly NSC Community Legal Defense), helped obtain the release from detention of Alma Centeno Santiago, a pregnant woman with 2 United States citizen children who had been detained in Bergen County Jail since April of 2019 pending deportation under a disputed Final Order of Removal.

Law school’s Immigration Clinic files suit in support of activist

Activist Claudio Rojas was featured in a documentary film, “The Infiltrators,” which is critical of ICE detention policies… Rojas’s detention and imminent deportation also threatens his pending applications for immigration status. A victim of a labor trafficking scheme by a former employer, Rojas had been working with the U.S. Department of Labor in its investigation. “Congress sought to protect victims of trafficking and crime from deportation. ICE can’t ignore those protections, or prevent other government agencies from investigating workers’ rights abuses,” said co-counsel Sarah Gillman and Gregory Copeland of NSC Community Legal Defense.

HOW TWO IMMIGRATION LAWYERS CREATED A RAPID-RESPONSE TEAM TO COMBAT ICE

Before founding the [Rapid Defense Network], their “guerrilla habeas” team, as Copeland called it, he and Gillman had worked together at the Legal Aid Society. She had been there for 17 years — 12 defending detained immigrants. He had joined in 2017, after quitting his corporate law job because he was enraged by the chaos created by President Donald Trump’s Muslim ban. Together, the two of them had worked on a number of successful efforts to stop deportations and get people out of detention. I first met them when writing about Danny Michel, whom they managed to bring back to the U.S. after he had already been deported to Haiti. Most notably, they represented Pablo Villavicencio, a deliveryman and father of two, whom some New Yorkers had come to affectionately call “pizza guy” after he was detained while delivering pizza to a military base in Brooklyn.

RDN Halts Deportation of Beloved Albany Chef

RDN today won a temporary restraining order preventing the removal of Kimino Ngoran – the beloved chef at the Capital City Mission in Albany – while he fights for his right to stay in the country.  Kimino was detained by ICE on January 23, 2019 as he complied with a request that he report for a supervisory check-in.  He was torn away from his family and community by ICE’s cruel and unlawful decision to detain him in an attempt to deport him to the Côte d’Ivoire – a country he fled 15-years-ago for safety.  But Kimino’s community have refused to allow him to be taken.
